A minimally invasive surgical procedure used to examine or treat abdominal and pelvic organs using a laparoscope (a thin tube with a camera and light). The laparoscope is inserted through a small incision in the abdomen and is used to diagnose or treat conditions such as pelvic inflammatory disease, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, or blocked fallopian tubes. It is performed under general anesthesia and is considered less painful and has a shorter recovery time than open surgery.
